The temperature is warming up nicely with average daytime high around 93 degrees. The small medjool dates are now being thinned in order to produce the best and largest fruit. We select each strand which holds about 25 dates and thin the strand down to 8 to 10 dates per strand.
There are several strands within a date bunch. This time consuming process will continue until every tree has be manually thinned. In addition to thinning, the date bunches will need to be tie-up to a date palm arm which is above the date bunch.
These date bunches will become very heavy in the next couple of months. Sometimes the may not be able to hold their own weight from their arms. So this added tie-up will assist the bunches in their growth.
